'A New Leaf' is the launch of a new gallery and retail direction at the wonderfully eclectic Vancouver Cafe in Albany. It features papercuts, jewellery, paintings, and homewares by Albany artists Tracey Margetts and myself. And it will also be the launch of my brand new website- designed by Ubik and the team at tall Traffic.
For the launch Alison will be whipping up her usual tasty fare, West Cape Howe will be providing their award winning local wines, and "Slap my Thigh's and Call Me Barbara" will be singing. (Thats Tracey's accapella group). So if you are in Albany come along to a night of celebration.
Its November 25th @ 6pm, at the Vancouver Cafe, 65 Vancouver St, Albany.

These are miniature papercuts consisting of 3 layers of paper and ink to create a 3D affect. They were commissioned by the Albany Port as the speakers gifts for an international Port Conference. All 14 of them are framed in small white box frames and are based on Albany- the harbour, hills, Amity which was the boat that bought the first explorers to the place and which is now a replica down on the foreshore.

"Miss Melville and Mrs Clarence" 2011, black and red paper, ink. This is a small scale papercut of the large scale papercut I am working on for the window of RICARDA. It depicts the beautiful and historic town of Albany where I live, on the south coast of Western Australia. Its main features are 2 hills (Mt Melville and Mt Clarence) in which this creative hub is nestled overlooking a stunning harbour. Albany and its features are nestled into the folds of these 2 grand ladies dresses, in my own way capturing some of the history of the place and the strong sense of community to be found here.

I have been exploring lasercutting some of the designs in wood and perspex, so stay tuned as they evolve into artworks and wearable art. See two examples above of "Paper, Scissors, Frock" design in MDF and red perspex. Imagine these as earings or pendants. More to come.
My current show is at Moo'ved Fashion and Art Gallery, Denmark, from Jan 1 - Feb 30. It features a range of both papercut and lasercut work.

"Paper, Scissors, Frock #2" now on at the Vancouver Store and Cafe in Vancouver St, Albany, is an extension of the show at Mark Blythes Fine Jewelry- with new and reworked peices, plus an installation of a flock of papercut birds which fly across the walls and pop up in small spaces. Vancouver Cafe is a vibrant, eclectic, communitY hub, filled with ever changing art shows, fantastic fresh food, all run by the by wonderful team of people headed up by Alison Teede. The exhibition continues until the end of November.

The exhibition at Mark Blythes has been extended and continues until early December so if you have not got a chance to see it- you have now.

'Initiation Dress' scoops Awards at Albany's "Illuminate" Exhibition

'Initiation Dress' is a part of 'Illuminate', an exhibition of 3D artworks by selected Albany artists at the residency Museum from Sep 24 - Oct 9, 2010. As a part of this exhibition there were 2 awards: the 'Grove Securities Aquisition Award' ($2000) and the 'Community Award' ($2000), which were judged by WA artists Margaret Ainscow and Dean Malcolm. "Initiation Dress' scooped both awards on opening night.

“Initiation Dress” papercut, 300gsm studio paper, 2010, Dimensions 150 x 105cm: “Initiation Dress” is an extension of my ideas in which I have been using papercut dresses as vessels/ frames in which to explore notions of femininity. For Illuminate, the white paper dress (similar to a wedding or ceremonial dress) is suspended in space while lighting creates an ethereal play of shadows, which are as essential to the piece as the dress itself. It’s about growth, life, and spirit and those realms (of the shadow world) in which we can’t firmly grasp but innately know somehow exists.

I have always been an avid op-shopper. As a young woman in her twenties who was exploring her creative potential, I used to collect vintage dresses and frocks from the 40’s and 50’s, which at the time were easy to find in op-shops. I was attracted to their beauty; their often gracious styles, fabrics and floral designs, and I was able to access another era of femininity in the wearing of them. With motherhood, ‘middle age’, plus the diagnosis of breast cancer in which I am in the middle of treatment, new challenges to femininity arise, and I find myself again attracted to the dress but this time as a potent symbol in my work. In the “Paper, Scissors, Frock” series I have used the dress as a frame, and in a sense a vessel, in which to contain images of growth, death, life, surrender, and healing, and the internal musings of this particular path on which I find myself. With that playful youthfulness involved in the collecting of those old dresses, that same free spirit is in the making of the papercuts. But a little older and a little wiser. The papercuts play with shadow and spirit. They are crafted around a kitchen table, the centre and heart of the home and family. They are works that deeply resonate with my place in life right now and the knowledge that the feminine will continue to change and evolve over the course of a lifetime.
